Do I have to apply every year?

Yes, you do. The application is online. The process is to fill out an online application each year. Once you have it filled in, you can either print it from your browser or wait for a copy which is sent automatically to your email address on record. In either case, print a copy of the application, sign it and mail it in with your $15 participation fee.

Things to consider when applying for hunts?

1. Only apply for hunts that your proficiency qualification allows you to hunt, whether it be "standard proficiency" or "sharpshooter proficiency". Someone with sharpshooter proficiency can apply for hunts requiring only standard proficiency, but not the other way around.

2. Only apply for hunts where you know you can attend the orientation meeting. The meeting is required!!! No exceptions.

3. Only apply for hunts where you can make the hunt dates. MBRB's policy is that you must make every effort to fulfill your hunt requirements.

What is the cost to be a MBRB member?

The cost to participate is two-tiered. There is an annual $15 application fee. This $15 is your fee for one year. It allows you to apply for any hunts for the year you are applying in. If you are selected for a hunt, there is a $10 hunt fee payable at the orientation meeting. This is a one-time fee for that year. If you happen to get selected as an alternate for a second hunt in that same year, you will not have to pay the fee again. You will get a receipt card for your $10 which you must present at any other orientation meetings you attend. If you lose it you will have to pay the $10 again.

What is the deadline for the application?
The deadline for applications is August 1st of the year you are applying.

What do I do with my profiency test results?

Do NOT mail them in with your application. You MUST bring them with you to any orientation meetings you are requested to attend.

What is the deadline to apply for hunts?

There has been some confusion about this. The application deadline date of August 1st is different than any deadline when applying for a hunt. Each hunt is described in detail at www.mbrb.org. The deadline to apply for ALL HUNTS is now August 15th.

How are hunt participants selected?

A preference point system was put in place in 2013. Each year you renew your participation in MBRB you receive a preference point. You can now rank your hunt selection by priority. Those who apply for a hunt as first choice will be put in a drawing which first selects hunters with the most preference points. A high percentage of the hunt slots are used in this primary drawing. A small percentage of those hunt slots go in another random drawing for those members who do not have enough preference points or did not get selected in the initial drawing. This method gives those with max preference points the ability to get in a hunt of their first choice. It also allows hunters without many preference points to have a chance at the hunt which they have listed as their top choice.

What is the special hunt category?

There are occasions where MBRB is called upon to do a special hunt that is often on small properties very close to residences, etc. These hunts are usually very high profile and there is zero tolerance for wounded deer. Therefore only MBRB members with sharpshooter status can apply for these hunts. In addition, those hunters may be asked to retake the sharpshooter proficiency test a second time in the presence of a board member. This may also include using broadheads while dressed in hunting clothes, and from an elevated treestand.

What if I can’t make an orientation meeting?

All selected hunters MUST be present at the orientation meeting. There is no room for negotiation. This is a requirement of MBRB and the participating landowners. It is a rigid requirement and there are no exceptions. Also note that if you are selected for a hunt, that is your primary hunt. You can’t be selected for another hunt as a primary hunter, so you must be careful to apply only for hunts in which you are sure you can attend the orientation meeting.

What if can’t make part of a hunt?

If you are selected for a hunt and can’t make part of it you must communicate it to your coordinator in time to find a replacement. If you fail to do so you may be excused from the rest of the hunt and in some cases removed from MBRB participation for the rest of that year. You would be removed for one year if you repeat the violation upon given a warning. MBRB does not want to do this, but the lack of hunter participation for whole hunts was brought to our attention by the very cities that provide the hunts to us. MBRB hunts are not set up to provide recreational opportunities for bowhunters – the hunts are a service to the landowners in order to control deer populations, and so your participation in the hunts is critical.

Is it possible someone can participate in more than one hunt?

A hunter can only be selected as a primary hunter once per year. In addition to that, a hunter can be selected as an alternate for other hunts. At the orientation meeting, if primary hunters don’t show up then the alternates are used to fill those slots. There is no guarantee an alternate will get to hunt. You are encouraged to attend the orientation meeting as an alternate. Many times alternates do get to participate.

It has been xxx amount of years since I have been drawn. What is up with that?

There are a number of reasons for this. The two most common are:

- Hunters don’t apply for hunts. They think just because they send in an application they are eligible for all hunts. That is incorrect. You must apply for all hunts you wish to enter the lottery for.

- There are many hunts to choose from but a lot of the hunts are on weekdays. If you only apply for hunts that happen on weekends, your chances are lower.

How do I get notified I was selected for a hunt?

The draw system automatically sends an email to all members who are selected for a hunt at the time of the drawing. Logging into your account and going to Hunts|Apply for hunts also will present you with Lottery Results if you have been selected. Keep in mind we can't control your email provider; if your provider blocks emails from us, it is still your responsibility to check online to see whether or not you were selected.

I have not taken my Bowhunters certification class. Can I still apply?

Yes, you can apply for any hunts you wish and you can be selected for a hunt. However, when you attend the orientation meeting you must provide proof that you have taken the class. If you can’t provide that proof you will not be allowed to hunt. Try and take the class as early as possible. As of 2014, the requirement has changed so that it now only requires passing the online written class – no field day is required any longer. In lieu of the field day, MBRB does encourage you to continue gaining as much mastery of real-life hunting knowledge as possible, such as participating in 3D shoots, watching videos showing shot placement and deer recovery, etc.

What happens at the orientation meetings?

After you have been selected for a hunt, you will receive an email from MBRB that will instruct you to attend a mandatory orientation meeting. You MUST attend the orientation meeting, or an alternate will take your spot. You must bring proof of any MBRB requirements that you are missing, i.e. your bowhunter education class certificate, proficiency test certificate, etc. You should arrive early to the meeting so that you can get registered. If you are missing any MBRB requirements, you will not be permitted to participate in the hunt

During the meeting, specific hunt rules, hunt areas, and any special requirements will be explained. Assignments to specific hunt areas will be made; this will usually be based on hunter ranking as selected by the computer in the drawing. In other words, the first hunter selected in the drawing will be called first to choose where and when they wish to hunt. The highest-ranking hunter (last one selected in the computer drawing) will take the last remaining hunt spot. There will be one or more MBRB hunt coordinators for each hunt. The hunt coordinators are responsible to assure the hunt operates safely, efficiently, and that all of the hunt rules are followed.

How do I apply for hunts?

Introduced in 2013 was the ability to select a hunt and assign a rank/priority to it. When applying for hunts you will be presented a list of hunts with check boxes. As you check the boxes, those hunts will be added to a list by the order of selection. Once you have selected your hunts, determine your order of preference for the hunts and then simply drag and drop them where you want them to be on the list. It will become apparent to you once you see the list of selected hunts. The critical part of ranking your hunt selections is that you MUST SAVE them in order for them to be updated in the database. You will still be able to change/modify/delete your rankings up to the date of the hunt selection by simply adding/deleting entries in the list or rearranging the rank of the hunts and SAVING it again.

Can a parent and son/daughter(minors only) hunt together?

If a son/daughter (minor only) is selected for a hunt then the parent can hunt with their child. If a parent is selected for a hunt the child can not hunt with the parent. We do our best to pair you up.

What do I need to do to pass the proficency test?

There are two qualifications. By clicking on the "Proficiency Test Location" link you can find out where you can take the test.

Standard qualification: 5 of 5 arrows in a 7" circle at 20 yards.

Sharpshooter qualification: 5 of 5 arrows in a 4" circle at 20 yards.

This test can only be taken once per day!

What does the Bowhunter Education class consist of?

MBRB requires this class but does not offer it to members. The class is offered through the Minnesota DNR. As of 2014, the requirement has changed so that it now only requires passing the online written class – no field day is required any longer. DO NOT GET THIS CONFUSED WITH THE MANDATORY YEARLY PROFICIENCY TEST REQUIREMENT OF MBRB. THE PROFICIENCY TEST IS TO TEST YOUR SHOOTING SKILLS AND DETERMINES WHICH HUNTS YOU CAN APPLY FOR.

I did not recieve an email when resetting my password?

1. Check your junk or trash folder.
2. If you are using a work pc your firewall might be preventing the email from reaching you. Try a non-work pc.

I get an error when clicking "Recover password" in my email to reset a password.

1. The reset password function will not work from a 4G phone. Use only a pc or laptop.

What are the requirements from a new MBRB member perspective?

1. Create an account with MBRB
2. Submit an application to MBRB
3. Take the online Bowhunters Ed course **** Take the online test on the Minnesota DNR web site.
4. Pass archery proficiency test **** The proficiency test is a yearly requirement.
5 . Apply for hunts **** Once your application has been processed you can apply for hunts.

How do I determine whether my application has been processed?

Log into your account. If your application has been processed you will see the following:

Your membership is renewed for <current year>.

Apply for hunts.

Preference Points

Also added in 2013 was the implementation of a preference point system. Once your application is processed, you are given a preference point. If you are selected for a hunt as primary and it is your #1 ranked hunt, your preference points will be reset to zero. Those members who are not selected for a hunt as primary for their #1 ranked hunt will retain their preference points. You do NOT lose your preference points if you are selected for a hunt which was not your #1 ranked hunt, if you are selected as an alternate, or are picked for a special hunt from the sharpshooter list. ONLY if you are selected as a primary for your #1 ranked hunt, will your preference points be reset to zero. Be sure that you can make the hunt dates and the orientation meeting of the hunts you are applying for. Again, once you are selected as a primary for a hunt your preference points are reset to zero - there are NO exceptions to this preference point reset regardless of your reason for not fulfilling your obligation to participate in a hunt for which you applied and were selected. Additional clarification: The preference point you are granted for simply signing up will be carried over if you do not apply for ANY hunts in a given year.

Using smart phones and work desktops with mbrb.org

Smart phones and some work desktops because of firewalls will not work with the web site.

How to rank/prioritize your hunt selections.

New in 2013 was the ability to select a hunt and assign a rank/priority to it.
